A break reminder that respects Focus mode on Mac

You set up Focus to protect your calls and deep work. Then a break app pops up in the middle of your screen share. Here's why that happens and what to look for instead.

The moment I uninstalled my first break reminder is still clear in my head. I was on a video call with a client when the app took over my screen and turned it black mid-sentence. The client thought my internet had died. Nobody took a break.

macOS had a way to keep that call quiet. The app just didn't use it. That experience is a big part of why Standro exists, and I told the longer story in why I needed a quiet reminder app. This article is the practical side: how Focus actually works with reminders, and what to check before you install one.

Why some reminders ignore Focus

macOS Focus filters notifications. When Do Not Disturb or a Work Focus is on, the system holds back the banners and sounds of apps you haven't allowed.

The catch is that many break apps don't use notifications at all. They open their own window, often full screen, on a timer. To macOS, that's just an app showing a window, and Focus has nothing to filter. So the only way a reminder can respect Focus is if the app itself checks whether a Focus is on before it shows anything.

What "respecting Focus" should mean

A lot of apps claim it. Here's the checklist I'd use to tell the difference:

  • It detects Focus on its own. You shouldn't have to pause the app every time you start a call.
  • It works with every Focus, not just Do Not Disturb. Work, Sleep and the custom ones you build too.
  • It's silent, not just smaller. No popup, no sound. A smaller popup during a presentation is still a popup.
  • It doesn't save up a backlog. When Focus ends, you shouldn't get three missed reminders at once.
  • It picks up again by itself when the Focus ends, without you remembering to restart it.

How Standro handles it

I built Standro around that list. It detects macOS Focus automatically and works with Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, Sleep and any custom mode. While a Focus is on, there are no popups and no sounds. The menu bar icon still updates silently, so a glance tells you where you are, and reminders resume when the Focus ends.

Two other settings help if you want it even quieter. Menu Bar Only mode turns reminders into a color change in the menu bar, with no banner at all. And every reminder clears itself after two minutes, so nothing piles up while you're heads down.

Make Focus do the work for you

A Focus-aware reminder is only as good as your Focus setup. A few habits made a real difference for me:

  1. Schedule a Focus for recurring calls. macOS can turn a Focus on at set times, so your weekly meetings are covered without thinking about it.
  2. Keep deep work Focus sessions finite. If Focus is on all day, a Focus-aware reminder will stay quiet all day. Two or three blocks of 90 minutes leave room for breaks in between.
  3. Stand right after the call. The end of a meeting is a natural break. When the Focus ends and the next reminder arrives, take it.

The second point is the one people miss. Respecting Focus is the right behavior, but it also means the reminder trusts you to leave gaps. If you're a developer living in back to back flow sessions, I wrote about that pattern in a break reminder for developers on Mac.

Comparing apps

Focus support is one of the criteria in my guide on how to choose a stand reminder app for Mac, alongside interruption style, idle detection and pricing. If you're still deciding whether you need an app at all, start with free stand up reminders on Mac.

Quick questions

Why does my break reminder still pop up during Do Not Disturb?

Focus only filters notifications. Many break apps show their own full screen window instead, so macOS has nothing to silence. The app has to check Focus itself.

Does Standro work with custom Focus modes?

Yes. It detects Do Not Disturb, Work, Personal, Sleep and any custom Focus you create.

Will I get a pile of reminders when Focus ends?

No. Missed reminders aren't queued. The icon updates silently during Focus and reminders simply resume afterwards.

Try Standro
